Countertop Market Trends: Necessary vs. Discretionary Replacements

According to Principia’s 2025 survey of 750 homeowners with countertop replacement projects in 2024, the market for countertop replacements shows a near-even split between necessary and discretionary reasons.

Necessary vs. Discretionary Countertop Replacements

Necessary Replacements (47%)

Homeowners replaced countertops due to extensive wear and damage (46%) or events like fire damage (15%).

Discretionary Replacements (53%)

More than half of projects were voluntary, led by homeowners updating aesthetics such as style, look, color, or material (39%) or upgrading material for better durability (36%).

Discretionary Lead  Kitchen Projects

Kitchens saw a slightly higher share of discretionary replacements (56%) compared to bathrooms (48%). Discretionary projects tend to be more sensitive to external factors, leaving homeowners in a “wait-and-see” mode influenced by economic and financial considerations.
